Final Fantasy IV – iOS Review

Square Enix's ongoing effort to revive the classic 2D Final Fantasy games takes a step into the Super Nintendo era with the release of Final Fantasy IV Pixel Remaster on iOS. Boasting a rich history of ports, this iteration emerges as a standout, capturing the essence of the beloved classic while introducing enhancements that make it a favorite among fans.

Final Fantasy IV Pixel Remaster benefits from the expertise of the original development team, including the iconic Nobuo Uematsu, who masterfully breathes new life into the classic score with fresh orchestration. The result is a soundtrack that retains its timeless melodies while gaining more depth and character, elevating iconic themes such as the Red Wings' militaristic anthem and the bittersweet Theme of Love.

Visually, overseen by original sprite artist Kazuko Shibuya, Final Fantasy IV Pixel Remaster stands as the best-looking 2D version of Cecil's story to date. The new sprites, bigger and more detailed than previous ports, add missing details while maintaining the proportions of the originals, offering a visually appealing and faithful representation.

The gameplay and story remain largely unchanged, with Final Fantasy IV introducing the Active-Time Battle system that added excitement to combat. The party composition changes dynamically throughout the game, providing a unique experience compared to its predecessors.

While the game utilizes the existing 2D script, it maintains a smooth and refined presentation, addressing previous translation issues. The focus on Cecil Harvey's journey, from commander of the Red Wings to a Paladin, unfolds against the backdrop of an engaging plot involving crystals, airships, summons, and a showdown with a godlike incarnation of hate—a quintessential "Final Fantasy" experience.

Despite the absence of bonus content found in previous ports, Final Fantasy IV Pixel Remaster continues to establish itself as a definitive rebuild of this essential series entry. The enhanced presentation, coupled with consistent efforts to maintain each game's unique features, makes it an ideal choice for both returning veterans and newcomers to the Final Fantasy series. For those new to the franchise, Final Fantasy IV Pixel Remaster offers a deep and well-developed cast, providing an excellent entry point before diving into the world of Endwalker in Final Fantasy XIV.

Overall, Final Fantasy IV Pixel Remaster on iOS succeeds in presenting a balanced whole, staying true to the classic while introducing improvements. Despite the absence of bonus content, it remains a compelling choice for fans and newcomers alike, showcasing the timeless appeal of this iconic JRPG.
