Final Fantasy XIV: Shadowbringers – PS4 Review

Almost a decade ago, Square Enix released Final Fantasy XIV to a lukewarm reception, setting the stage for a potential disaster. Yet, three years later, the Japanese developer rose from the ashes, crafting a vastly improved experience in A Realm Reborn. While not perfect, it laid the foundation for remarkable expansions like Heavensward and Stormblood. Now, with Shadowbringers, Square Enix has truly outdone themselves.

A World Torn Asunder

In Shadowbringers, a mysterious figure thrusts players into The First's world, unfolding a captivating tale that delves deep into the lore. This alternate reality, while reminiscent of familiar places, is strikingly different due to divergent events, providing a mix of nostalgia and novelty.

A Darker, Grimmer Narrative

Shadowbringers weaves a compelling, dark narrative, rivaling the intensity of Heavensward. With a Japanese RPG flair, it reunites players with old allies, forging new alliances to prevent an impending apocalypse. While the antagonist may lack the charisma of past foes, the epic conclusion is sure to please fans.

Gameplay Refined

Gameplay has been streamlined for most jobs, offering a consolidated yet satisfying experience. Tanks receive significant overhauls, though some may find them less distinct. Healing sees a rework, enhancing the dynamics of the role. New jobs like Gunbreaker and Dancer inject fresh excitement, adding depth and variety to gameplay.

Dungeons and Trials

Shadowbringers boasts exceptional dungeons, culminating in a breathtaking final scenario. While trials lack the depth of past entries, the overall experience remains engaging. Post-credits hints tease exciting possibilities, keeping players eagerly anticipating what’s next.

The Verdict

Final Fantasy XIV: Shadowbringers elevates the MMO genre to new heights, presenting a story that rivals the best in Japanese RPG history. Impeccable pacing, captivating events, and innovative mechanics make it a must-play adventure. Despite a few minor flaws, this expansion sets a new standard for the genre, delivering an exquisite and unforgettable experience.
